An Important American Renaissance Extensively Inlaid and Gilt-Incised Rosewood Parlor Cabinet, c. 1865, attributed to Herter Brothers, New York, the blocked and scrolled backsplash centered with an inlaid roundel of a moth surrounded by incised leaves, the terminals in the form of lion's paws, the pedimented center section with baize inset top, Greek key frieze, canted gilt anthemion incised deep molding above a small paneled inlaid drawer, the architectonic door centered with a relief carved figure of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, depicted here with a sheaf of wheat and holding a sickle. Meeks, New York, comprised of a sofa, armchair and pair of sidechairs, in a variation of the pattern commonly referred to as “Hawkins”, with very finely carved floral and grape motif, sinuous serpentine form, the backs with tall crests, cabriole arms and legs ending in casters, “estate” condition, sofa height 48 in., width 59 in., depth 26 in. Note: A nearly identical parlor suite, attributed to Joseph W. Meeks and presented to his daughter, Sophia Theresa at her marriage to Dexter Hawkins, is conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Provenance: Governor Jacques Philippe Roi de Villere (1761-1830), by descent to present owner. An iconic figure in Louisiana history, plantation-born Villere served as a page in the court of Louis XVI, was on the staff of Pierre Clement Laussat during Louisiana’s transition from French to American control in 1803, and served as Louisiana’s first native-born governor from 1816 to 1820. Villere served with distinction as major general of the Louisiana Militia in the Battle of New Orleans, which was fought partially on his Conseil Plantation below New Orleans.

An American Federal Cherrywood Sugar Chest, 19th c., Central Kentucky, the rectangular case with string inlay, fans and a compass star in center; the stand with one drawer, string inlay and square tapering legs, height 37 in., width 36 in., depth 17 1/2 in.
Note: Derived from Georgian bottle cabinets or cellarets, sugar chests were a specialized form in regions of the Southern backcountry where, before the advent of steamboats, sugar was imported from New Orleans with difficulty. The presence of a sugar chest in a Tennessee or Kentucky household signified its prosperity.

An Egyptian Revival Carved Rosewood Armchair, late 19th c., attributed to Herter Bros., New York, the rectangular back with scrolled stiles, padded arms fronted by Pharaoh terms with hoof feet ending in casters, height 38 in., width 28 1/2 in., depth 27 in.
Note: The execution of the terms and hoof feet used on this chair are similar to those used on two known Herter tables, both made for the Ruggles Sylvester Morse residence in Portland, Maine and now conserved by the Victoria Society of Maine. The execution of the scroll back of this chair also resembles those on a Herter sofa and armchair in the Morse residence.
Though a Maine native, Morse grew his fortune as an hotelier in New Orleans in the 1840's and 1850's, operating the St. Charles Hotel, the Banks Arcade, the City Hotel and the St. James. Morse engaged Gustave Herter in 1862 to furnish his summer residence in Portland though he was still in Louisiana during the Civil War.
