The lightning striking outside Neal Auction Company’s Summer Estates Auction was reflective of the positive energy and bidding in the room. A packed house coupled with an active phone bank made for strong prices across the board.

Among the highlights from a local lifetime collection of glass and porcelain was a KPM plaque painted by Knoeller (lot 322) which sold to a New York collector for $10,637 and a pair of early 19th c. clear blown glass hurricane shades (lot 536) for $9,200 which will now reside in a historic Louisiana plantation home. A collection of 19th c. American silver from a Mississippi estate featured a gutsy c. 1870 Ford & Tupper ice bowl (lot 264) selling for $2,760, a c. 1825-50 R. & W. Wilson tureen (lot 245) for $2,530 and c.1856 William Gale coin silver center bowl (lot 247) for $2,185. A Baldwin Gardner coin silver pitcher (lot 246) sold for $5,462.

Prices for American furniture were strong with a Renaissance Revival cabinet attributed to A.H. Lejambre (lot 452) selling to a New Orleans collector for $17,250, an Aesthetic Faux Bedroom Suite attributed to Horner (lot 73) for $13,800, a Rococo Revival giltwood pier mirror with a New Orleans provenance (lot 299) for $6,900.

English furniture attracted considerable interest with a high style papier mache table in the manner of Jennens and Betridge (lot 72) selling for $3,737, a George III side table (lot 282) for $4,600 and a finely decorated Carlton House desk (lot 286) for $8,050. A semi-antique Tabriz carpet (lot 337) sold for $10,350 to a couple for their French Quarter home, and a lady’s 18 kt. white gold and diamond anniversary ring (lot 129) sold for $9,200 to an Uptown New Orleans woman.

As usual, Southern Regional material attracted active bidding and strong prices. A set of early Newcomb pottery tankards decorated by Marie de Hoa LeBlanc (lot 382) sold for $9,487 to an out of state collector and a smaller Newcomb “Moon & Moss” vase (lot 383) sold for $ 3,220 to a local collector. Several bidders vied for a watercolor by Mississippi painter William Hollingsworth (lot 408) which sold for $8,337 and for two etchings by popular Charleston, South Carolina artist Alfred Hutty, with “Toward a New Day” (lot 413) selling for $6,900 and “Low Country Cabin” (Lot 414) for $4,312. .

Neal Auction Company’s next sale will be the much-anticipated Louisiana Purchase AuctionTM, to be held October 4th & 5th. Among the highlights of this sale are an early Newcomb vase decorated by Elizabeth Rogers, an Eighteen-Star American Flag commemorating Louisiana statehood c.1812-16, the entire collection from the Calhoun Mansion, 16 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina and property from the Old Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville, Georgia. Consignments are being accepted through August 25th. Preview will begin September 22nd.
