NEAL AUCTION COMPANY’S SUMMER ESTATES AUCTION ACHIEVES $1.4 MILLION

• Neal Auction Company’s Summer Estate Auction attracts bidders from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Macau, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Panama, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom

• eBay plays large role in sale, accounting for approximately 10% by value

• Over 150 Absentee Bids ∙ 183 Phone Bidders ∙ Packed salesrooms

• Drysdales take the vanguard, doubling, tripling and even quadrupling their presale low estimates

• “Sleeper” lot achieves $15,862.50

New Orleans, July 24 – Neal Auction Company’s July 22 and 23 Summer Estates Auction, featuring fine and decorative arts and antiques, witnessed considerable success with packed salesrooms and registered telephone and absentee bidders from across the country and from as far away as Egypt, China, Macau and Taiwan. eBay also played a large role in making the sale a success, with buyers acquiring approximately 10% of the sale by value.

Neal Auction Company’s Summer Estates Sale, aimed at young collectors and buyers new to the market, saw considerable interest from their target audience as well.

FURNITURE
Interest in furniture was considerable on both Saturday and Sunday with many lots selling well above their presale estimates.

Two large breakfront bookcases more than doubled their presale estimates with extremely competitive bidding within the salesroom and on the telephone. Lot 43, a 19th Century George III Style Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase, estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, sold for $10,200.00, while lot 1109, another 19th century George III Style Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase, estimated at $4000 to $6,000 achieved $10,281.74. Lot 255, a Neo-Classical Parquetry Inlaid Walnut Armoire also sold well against competitive bidding, achieving $14,687.50. And a beautiful George II Mahogany and Satinwood Sideboard (lot 355) more than doubled its $4,000 presale low estimate, selling for $9,106.25. Lot 369, A circa 1795 Louis XVI Bronze Mounted Samainier sold for $9,600.00, while lot 521, an American Renaissance Bedroom Suite attributed to John Jeliff, achieved an impressive $16,450.00. And lot 836 an English Aesthetic Walnut and Oak Sideboard, estimated at $6,000 to $10,000, sold for $11,025.00

The sleeper of the day, however, was lot 539, a 19th century New York Egyptian Revival Ebonized Parlor Chair, which, against a presale estimate of $1,200 to $1,800, sold for a remarkable $15,862.50

SILVER, SCULPTURE AND DECORATIVE ART
Neal Auction Company’s offering of Silver, Sculpture and Decorative art held its own this weekend as well with several lots achieving exceptional prices.

Lot 127, a stunning American Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Vase by George W. Shieber and Co, achieved $9,987.50, while lot 359, a Pair of English Argand Lamps sold for $7,343.75.

And against a pre sale estimate of $2,500 to $3,500, Neal Auction Company’s cover lot (lot 198) an Antique Alabaster Group of “Paris Abducting Helen” sold over the telephone to for an impressive $10,281.25, while lot 370, a Cesare Lapini (Italian 1848-1894) white Carrara marble bust of a “Wood Nymph” also performed quite well, achieving $7,637.50. Also selling well was lot 909, an Italian Carrara Marble figure of “Venus at her Bath,” which sold for $5,287.50.

In terms of porcelain, lot 1024, a Meissen Centerpiece, estimated at $800 to $1,200, sold exceptionally well against furious phone bidding for a remarkable $6,462.50. And lot 1088, a Vieux Paris Porcelain Dinner Service, estimated at $2,500 to $3,500 achieved $7,050.00.

FINE ART
In terms of fine art, Louisiana artist Alexander Drysdale took the vanguard during Neal Auction Company’s Summer Estates Auction.

Five landscape paintings by American artist Alexander John Drysdale (Louisiana 1870-1934) took the day in terms of fine art – doubling, tripling and even quadrupling their presale estimates. Lot 454, more than doubled its presale low estimate, selling for $7,637.50 while lots 463 and 464 more than tripled their presale lows, reaching $7,050.00 and $9,600.00 respectively. Lot 947, estimated at $2,500 to $3,500 sold for $6,168.75 while lot 948, estimated at $1,000 to $2,500, sold for $5,297.50.

Two Knute Heldner (New Orleans 1877-1952) oils, lots 451 and 454, also performed very well against their presale estimates, achieving $9,639.75 and $8,225.00 respectively, while lot 448, Ellis Wilson’s (American 1899-1977) oil “White Lilacs” doubled its low, achieving $6,756.74.

JEWELRY
Interest in jewelry was considerable this sale as well with its highlight being “A Strand of Graduated White South Sea Pearls” (lot 170), which achieved $11,426.25. A Yellow Gold and Diamond Ring, lot 169, also performed well at $8,812.50 while a Cartier Wrist Watch, lot 171, sold for $8,225.00.
