European Paintings have strong presence at
Early Summer Estates Auction Held June 8-9, 2002
The strong market for European paintings anchored Neal Auction Company’s Summer Estates Auction. Johan Weissenbruch’s canvas, Beach at Scheveningen (lot 198) more than doubled its low estimate, selling for $39,100. Eugenio Zampighi’s charming Breakfast Time (lot 492) brought $20,700. Double Entendre, (lot 162) a canvas by Antonio Casanova y Estorach sold for $12,650. Gustave Jacquet’s sensitively rendered portrait titled Maud (lot 192) brought $9,200. A pastel titled Spinning (lot 131) by Leon Augustin L’Hermitte sold for $9,200. A Leon Emile Caille oil titled Mother’s Pride (lot 123) sold for $7,205. Wouterus Verschuur’s Stable Interior (lot 199) brought $6,325.
Highlights in American art included a carved pine folk art portrait bust The Hero Andrew Jackson (lot 415) that surpassed estimate to sell at $7,475. Gilbert Gaul’s canvas A Hunter’s Toast (lot 436) sold for $15,525. A Havell edition engraving, American Coot (lot 314) after John James Audubon sold for $3,450. William Aiken Walker’s portrait of a female cotton picker (lot 392) brought $10,925, and Walker’s oil Nature Morte: Quails (lot 435) sold for $9,775. Sales of American paintings were crowned by Clarence Millet’s New Orleans scene Old Rampart Street (lot 339) that brought $16,675.
American furniture sales included an impressive carved oak dining room suite attributed to R.J. Horner Co., New York that sold for $44,850 (lot 509). A New York faux bamboo bedroom suite totaled $17,538 (lots 253-255). An Anthony Querville mahogany center table exceeded estimate to sell for $5,750 (lot 267). A late classical secretary of Kentucky origin brought $5,750 (lot 386). A 19th century Louisiana buffet bas sold for $9,775 (lot 401). A late classical center table exceeded estimate to sell for $4,600 (lot 430).
Sales in decorative arts were dominated by interest in silver. A monumental pair of Christofle candelabra sold for $14,950 (lot 482). A creamer and sugar by silversmith Christoph Kuchler for New Orleans retailer Hyde and Goodrich sold for $4,600 (lot 408). A pair of Sheffield candelabra by Mathew Boulton brought $6,900. A Tiffany & Co. sterling humidor from the World War II era sold for $1,505 (lot 289).
