Runaway Sales Results for Porcelain Highlight Neal Auction Company Spring Estates Auction April 13-14, 2002.

Neal Auction Company’s Spring Estates Auction, with offerings in American furniture, 19th and 20th century paintings, paintings and works on paper from a large New Orleans collection, and art pottery from southern makers along was also highlighted by intense bidding for English and Continental porcelain.

The most dramatic sale of the auction was lot 594, an Edwardian nineteen-piece desert set of Royal Crown Derby china signed by the artist Leroy. The auction estimate was soon left behind as intense bidding spiraling up to a final sale of $49,450. Another highlight in porcelain was lot 61, an early 19th century twelve-piece set of Samson swan-form cups and undertrays sold for above estimated value at $9,487.  American furniture performed very well. A Classical pier table, c. 1820 by a New York maker (lot 277) sold above estimate for $18,400. A Classical girandole mirror, c. 1825, New York (lot 382) sold for $11,500. Lot 501, a Federal inlaid pembroke table, sold for $8,013. A full tester bed of New Orleans origin, c. 1840 (lot 822) sold for $8,913.

Regional art pottery had a strong presence in the sale. A Newcomb College art pottery high glaze inkwell decorated by Louise Ayars, c. 1910 (lot 209) sold at several times its estimated value at $6,612. A Newcomb “Moon and Moss” matte glaze vase decorated by Anna Frances Simpson, c. 1921 (lot 212) sold for $12,075. A Newcomb matte glaze plate boldly decorated by Louise Ayars with a magnolia blossom (lot 221) sold for $3,450, and an Ayars decorated salt cellar sold for $1,495 (lot 222). A large Shearwater pottery “Sea and Sky” vase (lot 220) sold for $4,887, and a Shearwater plate (lot 219) sold for $3,738. Vases by George Ohr (lots 237, 238, 239) sold for $3200, $2070, and $1840.

American works from the collection of Emajean and Howard Buechner of New Orleans generated interest from many bidders. A remarkable scrap book dating 1920-1927 compiled by Alexander John Drysdale (New Orleans, 1870-1934) sold for $10,638 (lot 638). A Drysdale oil titled Classical Louisiana Oak Tree, Bayou Landscape (lot 251) sold for $6,900, and the Drysdale oil, The Hills of Columbia Louisiana on the Ouachita River (lot 252) sold for $6,440. A Havell edition engraving after John James Audubon (American 1785-1851) Great Footed Hawk, No.4 plate 16 (lot 306), sold for $4,600. Another Havell etching, Pied Oyster Catcher (lot 336) sold for $2990. A Bien edition chromolithograph, c. 1860 (after Audubon), Eider Duck No.6-2, (lot 336) sold for $2,300. A signed etching by Ogden Pleissner (American, 1905-1983) Passing Pintails (lot 143) sold for $4,888, and the Pleisner etching, The River at Evening (lot 144) sold for $7,763. An oil titled Cows at Salmon Brook Meadow by Aaron Draper Shattuck (American, 1832-1928) sold for $7,763 (lot 761).

Other fine art offerings included an oil on canvas titled Cypress Trees, Louisiana Bayou by William Henry Buck (Louisiana 1840-1888) that sold for $71,875 (lot 241). John Mc Crady’s (American, 1911-1968) New Orleans Dock Scene, an oil on canvas, brought $43,700 (lot 260). Impressionist Landscape, an oil by Carl Wuermer (American 1900-1982) brought $8,050 (lot 202). An oil of a Spanish courtyard by Manuel Wssel (Spain, 1833-1907) sold for $16,675 (lot 505).
