Two Southern Regional Paintings Set Record Prices at Neal Auction Company’s Winter Estates Auction

The recent Winter Estates Auction attracted exuberant bidding on furniture, decorative art, and set artist record numbers for two paintings of Louisiana historical significance. The paintings auctioned were: “Star Plantation, St. Charles, Louisiana” by Marie Adrien Persac (French/Louisiana, 1823-1873), active New Orleans, 1857-1872), estimated between $75,000 to $100,000, sold for $195,000, (lot 321), and “Backyard in Algiers” by Richard Clague (American/Louisiana, 1821-1873), estimated from $100,000 to $125,000, sold for $189,500, (lot 356).

Other painting highlights include: “The Sidewheeler Creole” by James Bard (American, 1815-1897) realized $43,125, (lot 338), “Paysage en Bleu (Country Landscape with Ducks and Cottage)” by Johan Barthold Jongkind (Dutch, 1819-1891), for $12,650, (lot 108), and a Bennett Hubbard (British, 1806-1870) “Young Boy with His Favorite Terrier”, sold for $5,750, (lot 107).

Neal Auction was fortunate to have items from the Chinqua-Penn Foundation including exceptional objects like a fine set of six imperial Russian silver gilt and enamel goblets, brought $6,325.00, (lot 38), a tall Continental silver wager cup, probably Germany, late 19th c. sold for $2,070, (lot 41), a pair of late Georgian Sheffield crested three light candelabra, 19th c., realized for $4,887.50, (lot 92), and a late Georgian Sheffield two-handled warming tray, early 19th c., sold for $3,450, (lot 94).

A strong collection of American furniture included property from the Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville: an elaborately carved American rococo rosewood sofa, attributed to John Henry Belter, sold for $31,625, (lot 265), an important set of four New York mahogany sidechairs, c. 1820, realized $14,950.00, (lot 222), an American classical carved mahogany sideboard, c. 1825, sold for $8,912.50, (lot 261), an American rococo laminated and carved rosewood sofa, attributed to J. & J.W. Meeks, sold for $7,475, (lot 347), an exceptional American classical mahogany and gilt-stenciled pier table, c. 1825 sold for $5,175, (lot 275), an American rosewood armoire, c. 1850, realized $6,037.50, (lot 348), and an American late classical mahogany secretary/bookcase, c. 1830, brought $6,037.50, (lot 840).


English and Continental furniture comprised of: an important Russian mahogany and burled walnut inlaid bureau a cylindre in the Neo-Classical-style, c. 1860, sold for $19,550, (lot 428), a beautiful Irish regency inlaid mahogany pedestal sideboard, early 19th c., received $10,350, (lot 281), a George III inlaid mahogany bureau bookcase, primarily 18th c., sold for $6,612.50, (lot 157), a Spanish Baroque-style stained pine commode, 19th c., realized $11,500, (lot 115), a Dutch Neo-Classical mahogany linen press, early 19th c., sold for $10,925, (lot 282), and a Continental mahogany parcel gilt and Verde Antico tilt-top table, mid-19th c., brought $5,750, (lot 254).

Sales of decorative arts and jewelry consisted of: a pair of monumental patinated and gilt bronze figural torcheres, sold for $8,050, (lot 596), an extensive Paris porcelain dinner service, c. 1860, brought $5,750, (lot 232), a rare and important Paris biscuit and glazed porcelain goblet, c. 1830-1845, the atelier of Jacob Petit, far exceeded estimates, and sold for $5,750, (lot 817), an attractive pair of Louis XVI-Style gilt bronze frosted glass lanterns, sold for $5,405, (lot 874), and a spectacular retro platinum and diamond bracelet, containing one emerald-cut diamond, approx. 1.25 ct., (VS1 clarity, G color) and 156 round, baguette and marquise cut diamonds, totaling approx. 6 to 6.5 cts. realized $13,225, (lot 627).
